Martha Karua, popularly known as the Iron Lady might be Kenya’s first female Deputy President after the upcoming General Elections on 10th August. This might come true following an endorsement by the Azimio La Umoja’s Women Brigade earlier today.
While addressing the press shortly after their meeting at Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi, Youth and Gender Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rachel Shebesh revealed that women have anonymously endorsed the Iron Lady to deputize Raila Odinga and will continue lobbying to have her take the mantle. She, Ms Shebesh also disclosed that Martha Karua was endorsed by a total of 26 women representing different political parties within Azimio – One Kenya Alliance and further noted that Martha Karua’s leadership and development track record speaks for itself and meets all merits to serve in the capacity of a Deputy President.
“We are here as Azimio women, all the 26 parties that are in Azimio. Today we decided to meet the women league chairs. One of the reasons we are here today, is simply as this, Martha Karua, Deputy President, Azimio,” she claimed. Ms Shebesh further added that to her, Karua is a woman of integrity, committed, and a national figure.
The CAS went ahead and noted that they will now push for a serious conversation within Azimio to have Martha Karua installed in the position. “That is the main focus of our meeting today and how we will start lobbying. We are going to start that serious conversation in Azimio that we think the number two should be Martha Karua,” she affirmed.
Martha Karua is one of the top leaders who have been hinted as possible candidates for Raila’s running mate position. Others prospects are; Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Murang’a County Woman Representative Sabina Chege, and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth. Does this shape up the fate of William Ruto on who he selects as his running mate?
